Big Tides

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

We have had some pretty big tides this week which is always joyous for us at home as when we get a 6 meter tide and a North East strong wind behind it we get our yard flooded. The problem 2 nights ago was that although I knew that there was a big tide at 5am the wind got up to gale force during the night. So when it eventually woke me it was all too late! The sea had burst through the gate and come up our yard and into the bottom shed and fused the freezer which in turn knocked out the ring main switching all the clocks off so that we had no idea what time it was. I have to say it isn’t a pretty sight seeing me stamping around in a dressing gown, up to my knees in freezing sea water, trying to shut the back gate to stop half the contents of the yard disappearing out into the harbour. You’ll be pleased to know that there are NO pictures.
These trials aside the big tides give the islands a different look. It really does change the appearance when you can only see water and no, or very little, sand. Almost tropical. tg

Summer’s here on Scilly.

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Well I know I might be a bit previous but it always feels like Summer is here when the Scillonian come for the first time. She came at the beginning of this week and very fine she looks to with her new white funnel, it makes her look quite different. I will post a picture as soon as my new camera arrives, I’m afraid the other one packed up when I got back from New Zealand. Anyway a new robust Olympus is winging it’s way somewhere in the post. So look out for lots more pics and some video as well, if I can figure out how to upload it. You Tube here I come !!!!!!

The ‘f’ word

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

It’s been really fine here for sometime, well until the middle of last week that is, then the fog descended and joy was unconfined. I got stuck on the mainland on Wednesday night along with many others who had been invited to the 4 millionth passenger bean feast at British International Helicopters. Can’t you just guarantee that something will happen to spoil your fun!!! Any road up the weather has continued to hold up several flights over Thursday, Friday and Saturday and low and behold today is looking a bit iffy as well. I won’t bother to give you a picture as it will only depress.
